WHAT IS TECH FEST?

TechFest 10… Here we go again!

In nine short years, Tech Fest has grown far beyond our greatest expectations. What began as a small after school tech club has grown into a large-scale production run by the students of the OCVTS Performing Arts Academy. As Tech Fest continues to evolve, the students continue to take on the larger responsibilities that come with planning a professional event. Student positions can include administrative logistics, sound, lighting, photo, video, tickets, hospitality, graphic design, social media, marketing, merchandise, and much more. You name it, they do it. Every job teaches students how to communicate with professionals in the industry: with guidance from Bill Bourke and the audio alumni, students learn and gain knowledge in all aspects of production.

Tech Fest is dedicated to the late Dennis Bourke (father of Bill Bourke and founder of the OCVTS Audio for Electronic Media program). TechFest raises money for student scholarships. To date, we’ve raised over $50,000 for the “Hopes and Dreams Scholarship,” which has since been renamed the "Dennis Bourke Hopes and Dreams Scholarship." Through the years we’ve had hundreds of bands and artists from all over the country perform on our stage. Due to the abundant amount of interest, compiling bands to perform on our stages has become a daunting task. This year we are very blessed to have former students Billy Nally and Nick Schmidt as part of the lineup with “The Wrecks.” As a teacher, moments like this reassure us that we have done our best to prepare these students for success.

But wait! The music doesn’t end there!

Tech Club hosts a number of events throughout the year to help bring art back to Ocean County. Each fall, Tech Club collaborates with Ocean Gate municipality to produce "A Night of Bonfire and Music" on the Ocean Gate boardwalk. The event brings the residents of Ocean Gate, as well as those of Ocean County, together for a night of great music on the beach. This event and many others provide great opportunities for the students of OCVTS to gain “real-world experience” in both the music industry and in building an enduring sense of community. The Tech Fest team looks forward to finding innovative ways to collaborate with new artists, businesses, and communities.
